ABOUT THE FOUNDER

Whakatipu Timber Co. was founded in 2022 by Richard Gunston, a local Arrowtown arborist, whose spent the past 7 years working in the Central Otago area. During this time he found that too often trees would be turned into firewood, so he set about saving logs of all species and sizes, to then mill them into usable timber.

What started out as a passion for finding beautiful wood through local friends and colleagues, has now turned into a nation wide hunt for the most exquisite logs New Zealand has to offer.

We realise the need for quality timber that's sourced locally and sustainably in the district, and know that woodworkers from all over are in search of that one-of-a-kind piece.

Knowing this, we have gone the extra mile to make sure all our native timber is MPI certified, and all the exotic non-native timber has been cut for repurposing

ABOUT WHAKATIPU TIMBER CO.

The journey has just begun for us at Whakatipu Timber Co. and we're excited to grow our stock of timber, providing a natural product for all our local artisans and woodworkers.

We pride ourselves on being able to supply the region with good quality, furniture grade timber that hold unique characteristics and features. Finding the best timber is what we're good at, and we go to immense lengths to make sure we have the right product for your project.

Our mission is to salvage and repurpose trees in a sustainable way, giving a new lease of life to timber that would otherwise be cut down for firewood or left to rot.

Whether that be wilding Larch and Oregon trees in the high country, or veteran Oaks and Walnuts in neighborhood backyards, we believe trees and timber can be repurposed and turned into beautiful statement pieces for any occasion.
